Tenure Track Teaching Position in Environmental Data Science

The Bren School of Environmental Science & Management (www.bren.ucsb.edu) invites applications for a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE) position, to start July 1, 2020. A LPSOE is a tenure-track faculty member whose primary responsibility is teaching and teaching-related tasks and secondary responsibility is professional and/or scholarly achievement and activities, especially as they relate to instruction and pedagogy. LPSOEs also have responsibility for University and public service.

The Bren School is a graduate school within UCSB that provides rigorous, multi-disciplinary training in environmental science and management to Master's and PhD students. The faculty is drawn from the natural sciences, social sciences and management.

This position is primarily responsible for courses in the School's new Master of Environmental Data Science (MEDS) degree program, and may also include some teaching in the School's established Master of Environmental Science and Management (MESM) program.

The Bren School faculty seeks a data scientist with demonstrated excellence in data science tools and techniques, superlative teaching skills, and interest or experience in environmental science and management, who will contribute to the Masters in Environmental Data Science (MEDS) program in in areas such as:
-Teach courses on computational data science skills, including data semantics and metadata, modeling, and workflow management.
-Teach courses on the modern data science software stack, including Python, R, SQL, and cloud platforms.
-Help supervise student group capstone projects, including instruction in team science and project management.

Committed, innovative data science practitioners who possess the ability to lead, collaborate, and organize curricular and programmatic needs are encouraged to apply.

The expected teaching load for this position is 6 courses per year. In addition, the position will participate in the management and governance of the overall MEDS program.

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation at the time of application and must have completed a PhD at time of hire in a related field (environmental, social, and/or computational science). Applicants must also possess at least one year of teaching experience at the university level. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2020. Research experience in an environmental field is highly desirable.
