Position description

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a renewable full-time lecturer in German beginning Fall 2015. Responsibilities include teaching primarily elementary and intermediate German language courses, as well as occasionally upper-level (advanced) courses; development of the curriculum; student recruitment; collaborating with other language faculty in the program; participation in extracurricular activities for students and other service activities as assigned. The position offers opportunities to create new courses and contribute to program building.

Minimum requirements include an MA in German; native or near-native command of German and English; commitment to a communicative curriculum; knowledge of proficiency-based assessment and ACTFL standards; demonstrated excellence in college-level German language teaching for at least three years; experience using technology in the language classroom; and familiarity with the North American higher education system. Background in Applied Linguistics desirable.

Full time lecturers hired in this search teach eight classes over three quarters (3-3-2) and may receive two year contracts with the possibility of renewal up to six years; at the sixth year, they may be considered for a continuing appointment, which is an ongoing contract with merit reviews every three years. Salaries are competitive and vary depending upon training and experience; appointments include full benefits. Terms and conditions of employment are subject to UC policy and any appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Positions are pending funding approval.
