The position is open to exceptional candidates in all fields of Psychological & Brain Sciences. We are especially interested in hiring a colleague whose scholarship focuses on stereotyping, discrimination, race, ethnicity, or inequality. Examples of research areas include, but are certainly not limited to, social interactions between and among ethnic majority and minority groups, the neurobiological systems involved in the categorization, perception, and evaluation of race, the evolutionary or developmental underpinnings of coalition formation and dominance hierarchies, the effects of conscious and unconscious biases in social systems and institutions, or how biological systems are affected by discrimination.

This position is one of four North Hall Chairs being recruited at UCSB. The North Hall Chairs were created to bring to campus ladder-rank faculty whose research, mentorship, and leadership will further UCSB's commitment to diversity. The endowed chairs were named in recognition of the role that black students' takeover of North Hall in 1968 played in the establishment of the Black Studies Department and the Center for Black Studies. Competitive applicants for the position will have demonstrated a commitment to providing academic mentoring to, and supporting the research of undergraduate and/or graduate students from diverse backgrounds, including those from minority groups underrepresented in the sciences. The successful candidate is expected to facilitate the academic support of African American students and undergraduate student research as well as forge interdisciplinary scholarly connections across disciplines, especially with the other North Hall Endowed Chairs.

The Department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
