The Religious Studies Department at University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for the Bhagwan Vimalnath Endowed lecturer position in Jainism and South Asian Religions beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. Responsibilities include teaching three quarters of Hindi language plus two undergraduate courses in the area of Jainism and nonviolence studies, plus two undergraduate survey courses in the study of South Asian religions and Indic civilizations. Minimum qualifications: Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation at the time of application. PhD must be awarded by the time of appointment. Fluency in Hindi and English. Excellent record of teaching experience of undergraduates at the college level and experience teaching Hindi language are highly desirable. Preference will be given to applicants who already have a PhD.
This endowed lecturer position will complement a core faculty in the academic study of religion and specifically South Asian religions. The Department of Religious Studies offers a major and a minor in religious studies, with a very strong component in South Asian traditions, which currently enables students to acquire a fundamental knowledge of Sanskrit, South Asian history, Vedic traditions, Bhakti traditions, Hindu philosophical traditions, modern Hindu traditions, South Asian Islamic traditions, South Asian Buddhist traditions, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The Department also has a vibrant PhD program in South Asian traditions, drawing many excellent graduate students specializing in South Asian religions and requiring language training.
This newly endowed Bhagwan Vimalnath Lecturer in Jainism and South Asian Religions will strengthen not only the Religious Studies Department's offerings but also the campus-wide interdisciplinary South Asian Studies group comprising eighteen core faculty whose teaching and research interests involve a significant focus on South Asia. The lecturer position is renewable pending funding and an excellent teaching record.
