Jr. Specialist Position in the Neuroscience Research Institute
Anticipated Start Date: April 1, 2019
Salary: Based on UCSB Specialist series salary table

Position description: A position is available for a full-time Junior Specialist in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Coffey to conduct experiments in the field of retinal cell biology. Although there will be some lab management duties (ordering, solution preparation), the position will primarily involve using in vitro and in vivo models of retinal degeneration to test various compounds in their ability to modify the retina's response to injury and disease. Appointees at this level are expected to enable research as part of an established team of scientists.

Minimum qualifications: A bachelor's degree or equivalent in neuroscience or related field at time of application is required.

Preferred qualifications: The ideal candidate will have experience in animal models of retinal degeneration, cell culture, various imaging techniques (immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, light microscopy), histology, Western blots, Immunoprecipitation, and PCR. Additional specialized qualifications that would be beneficial include ocular surgery (retinal detachments, intraocular and subretinal injections), IM and IP injections, electroretinograms and ocular coherence tomography. Experience using Excel and performing basic statistical analyses, as well as experience in preparing manuscripts for publications is also preferred.

The initial appointment is for 1 year, full-time with benefits. Continuation beyond 1 year will be based on performance and availability of funding.
