Position description

The Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG) (http://sfg.msi.ucsb.edu/) is a research team affiliated with the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and the Marine Science Institute at UCSB. SFG is also part of the Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab) (http://emlab.msi.ucsb.edu/), a new interdisciplinary research enterprise at UCSB focused on developing market-based solutions for some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. SFG uses bioeconomic modeling, spatial analysis, and big data analytics to develop innovative science and improve the ecological and economic performance of fisheries and other ocean uses.

SFG seeks an individual with strong quantitative and modeling skills to conduct research and analyses on the viability of using seaweed mariculture as a climate change mitigation strategy. The individual in this position will work closely with SFG Principal Investigators.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
● Conducting literature reviews and expert interviews
● Scoping and developing a life cycle assessment model, and conducting a life cycle impact analysis for seaweed farming
● Developing a basic economic model and refining life cycle impacts based on various assumptions about the economic viability of aquaculture and carbon offsets
● Writing reports and developing presentations

Basic Qualifications
● Master's degree in environmental science, oceanography, engineering, or a related field at time of application

Additional Qualifications
● 1-3 years of experience conducting interdisciplinary research on natural resource management
● Any amount of experience conducting life cycle assessments

Preferred Qualifications
● Excellent research, analytical, and modeling skills, including experience conducting literature reviews and/or bioeconomic models;
● Relevant practical experience with seaweed aquaculture, quantitative ecology, bio-economic models, and/or natural resource economics;
● Proficiency with R, GaBi, and Excel;
● Excellent communication skills to contribute to reports and presentations, and translate scientific concepts for diverse audiences;
● Excellent computer skills including fluency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs, Gmail, Box, and Google Calendar;
● Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with partners, and to work effectively as part of a highly collaborative research team;
● Ability to work independently and balance a diverse portfolio of responsibilities simultaneously.

100% time Assistant or Associate Specialist position for a 9 month appointment, with level and salary step commensurate with qualifications. Current funding supports position for 9 months from start date, with the possibility of renewal for additional month(s). The start date is negotiable, but ideally would start in March 2019. A 100% position for 9 months is eligible for mid-level benefits. If position is renewed beyond 12 months, incumbent becomes eligible for full benefits.
