Position description

The College of Creative Studies (CCS) at UC Santa Barbara invites applications for temporary lecturer positions to teach undergraduate courses in the Music Composition Program during the 2019-2020 Academic Year. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the College and the availability of funding. Temporary appointment positions are variable in terms of percentage of time (5% to 100%). They will range from one quarter to one year, with the possibility of reappointment being dependent upon program needs and teaching performance. For a winter quarter appointment, the service period will begin January 6, 2020, and for a spring quarter appointment the service period will begin March 30, 2020.

Responsibilities include teaching applied lessons and/or seminars in order to meet specific curricular needs, as determined by the College. Administrative duties include recruiting, student advising and supplemental application review, depending on program needs. Terms and conditions of employment are subject to UC policy and any appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Salary is based on University of California salary scales and depends upon qualifications.

A Masters degree in Music Composition (or equivalent degree from another country) is required at the time of application. Additionally, applicants must have at least one year of teaching experience by the time of appointment. A doctoral degree in Music Composition and at least two year’s teaching experience is preferred (in both cases, TA experience is counted) by the time of appointment.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

CCS (www.ccs.ucsb.edu) is a small undergraduate college designed for self-directed students in the sciences and humanities within a world-class research university. It provides a rigorous, accelerated program facilitating original work, and offers a BA in music composition. We encourage applications from those who have the ability and motivation to engage talented undergraduate students across various sub-disciplines of music.

To apply, please submit application materials here:
https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/JPF01581. In order to be considered, applicants must submit the following: cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, scores and recordings of two to three original works (pdf file with embedded links), and short descriptions of two to three courses reflecting the applicant’s areas of expertise and interest (for course examples, please visit: https://www.ccs.ucsb.edu/courses). Applicants must also solicit three letters of recommendation via the application system
https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/JPF01581. Teaching evaluations may also be submitted if available.

In addition, applicants are encouraged to submit an optional Statement of Contributions to Diversity. If submitted, the statement will be reviewed for evidence of teaching, creative activity, professional and/or public service contributions that promote diversity and equal opportunity. Examples of such contributions might include the following:
- effective strategies used for the educational advancement of students in various under-represented groups
- demonstrated contributions to the advancement of equitable access and diversity in education
- contributions furthering diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through participation in such activities as recruitment, retention, and mentoring of scholars and students.

To receive primary consideration for the 2019-20 academic year, all required application materials must be received by the first review date: September 27, 2019. Completed applications received after this date will be reviewed by the search committee if the position has not yet been filled. The posting will remain open until October 31, 2019 or until department needs are fulfilled, whichever comes first. If you would like to continue to be considered after that date, and the position is advertised again, you will need to submit a new application.

Please note: the use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. See the review date specified in UC Recruit to learn whether the department is currently reviewing applications for an upcoming opening. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.

Due to the short timeline for appointment for this position, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
