The English for Multilingual Students Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is seeking a Program Director (JPF01584). The appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer with Security of Employment, with tenure (working title of Associate Teaching Professor), effective July 1, 2020.
The English for Multilingual Students (EMS) Program is a dynamic program that enrolls approximately 2,000 students annually. The Director position combines administration and classroom instruction; the courseload is three courses per year, typically one per academic quarter. The Director leads a team of nearly 20 instructors in curriculum development and implementation along with writing assessments and placements for incoming students. The Director works closely with other campus units supporting international students, including Campus Learning Assistance Services, the Office of International Students and Scholars, and graduate staff advisors across the disciplines. The Director also coordinates program activities with the EMS Program Business Officer. Additional responsibilities include recruiting and mentoring instructors; conducting reappointment, promotion, and merit reviews of instructors; and reviewing course sequence learning outcomes. The position offers the potential for the development of new initiatives as well as possible opportunities to interact with faculty across the campus through the Applied Linguistics Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Emphasis and various Academic Senate committees.
The EMS Program supports primarily international students in baccalaureate and graduate degree programs. The program offers four levels of undergraduate writing. - A Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, or a closely related discipline at the time of application.
- At least three years of administrative experience in a university-level Academic English or Writing program.
- Teaching expertise in English for Academic Purposes, as demonstrated through at least one year of teaching experience in the field.
- Knowledge of university-level second language writing pedagogy, as demonstrated through relevant coursework, teaching experience, and/or research experience.
- Professional engagement, as demonstrated through conference presentations, publications, and/or academic service.
- Experience with Academic English programs for international graduate students.
- Experience with development of assessment instruments.
