Position description

The Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab) is an interdisciplinary team of economists and scientists based at UC Santa Barbara dedicated to bringing market-based solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. emLab conducts cutting-edge research and develops innovative policy solutions related to marine fisheries, climate change, freshwater resources, ecosystem services, and poverty alleviation. emLab takes an interdisciplinary approach to environmental problem solving, combining economic principles, ecological insights, and big-data analytics to maximize its real-world impact.

emLab is seeking a Development Coordinator with excellent writing and copy-editing skills who will work closely with emLab’s Executive Director, six Principal Investigators, and research staff to support and advance emLab’s mission and impact. The Development Coordinator will be responsible for writing project concepts and proposals to secure funds for emLab research projects and initiatives, developing project budgets, managing contracts and grants with the University and external partners, and writing and editing diverse communications products, including project summaries for the emLab website, that highlight key emLab research findings and their real-world applications.

We are seeking a highly-motivated, detail-oriented team player who is able to juggle many concurrent responsibilities to fill this exciting and dynamic role. We’re looking for a passionate Development Coordinator who can work with our team to bring our research to life and help shape the future of our organization. The successful candidate will have strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work across emLab project teams to turn novel ideas into compelling project proposals and communicate research findings to diverse audiences.

Qualified applicants must have:

-A Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource economics, environmental communications, public policy, journalism, or a related field at the time of application.

In addition, by the time of appointment, applicants must have at least 2 years of experience developing written communication materials to support fundraising efforts and/or to communicate environmental or economic research to broad audiences;

OR

-A Master's degree in environmental science and management, natural resource economics, environmental communications, public policy, journalism, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
● Exceptional writing skills, including experience writing and editing diverse fundraising and communication materials such as project scopes of work, grant proposals and reports, website content, blog posts, press releases, and other communications products;
● Experience synthesizing information gathered from in-person meetings and brainstorm sessions, as well as existing written materials, to develop clear and cohesive communications products for diverse audiences (e.g., philanthropic, NGO, government, and Universities);
● Experience managing document review processes, including circulating documents with comments and questions for specific contributors, setting review deadlines, and holding teams accountable to deadlines to ensure high-quality work products are always delivered on time;
● Experience developing project budgets for research or other programmatic activities;
● Subject matter expertise related to natural resource management, environmental economics, marine fisheries and conservation, climate change, renewable energy, water markets, and/or ecosystem services;
● Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work well with diverse internal and external collaborators;
● Ability to handle a diverse portfolio of projects simultaneously with speed, accuracy, and courtesy, while exhibiting exceptional levels of insightful planning;
● Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational, time management, and note-taking skills;
● Excellent computer skills, including fluency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar.

This position is a 100% time appointment for one year from the start date with the possibility of reappointment, contingent upon performance and funding. Position start date is negotiable but ideally would start December 1, 2019. This appointment includes a competitive benefits package with medical, dental and vision insurance and a UC retirement plan. Salary is commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
