Description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a full time Assistant Project Scientist with an anticipated start date of April 1, 2020. The initial appointment will be for a period of two years. The Department is looking for an individual with a particular emphasis in the area of computational biochemistry and biophysics.

In this position, the Assistant Project Scientist will perform simulations of protein folding and protein aggregations in mixed osmolyte conditions. Specifically, the project involves enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations of the Tau protein implicated in Alzheimer’s Disease, with the goal of understanding how point mutations and solution conditions affect self-assembly. The Assistant Project Scientist will work closely with experimental groups on and off-campus, and will direct projects of the graduate and undergraduate students in the Shea research group.

Basic qualifications: The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Physics, with at least two years of postdoctoral experience at the time of application.

Additional qualifications: The applicant must have at least 5 years of prior experience with programming and know how to use molecular dynamics simulations packages, as evidenced of having used molecular dynamics simulations packages as described in the Methods sections of their publications at the time of application. The applicant must have at least 5 years of previous experience working on problems related to protein aggregation and to proteins in different solvents, as evidenced through their publications at the time of application (specifically, they must have at least 2 publications in this area).

For preferred qualifications: Successful candidates with a background in force field development are preferred. Experience collaborating with experimental groups is preferred. The applicant should possess knowledge (as evidenced through publications) of the following computational approaches: molecular dynamics simulations, enhanced sampling techniques (replica exchange, umbrella sampling, metadynamics), and theories of solvation.
