Director, Teaching & Learning, UC Santa Barbara Library (Associate or Full Librarian)

UC Santa Barbara Library seeks a collaborative and visionary teacher and leader to direct its newly-created Teaching & Learning Department. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement, the Director of Teaching & Learning will take UCSB Library’s instructional program to the next level by developing new and coordinated approaches to information literacy instruction, advancing online learning initiatives, and collaborating with campus stakeholders to incorporate, promote, and assess information literacy in the curriculum.
The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and information literacy threshold concepts, as well as experience teaching in multiple modalities in academic settings.
The expected effective date of this position is April 1, 2021 or later.
The Director of Teaching & Learning will provide strategic direction and planning for UCSB Library’s instructional program, with a focus on sustainability and scalability. They will lead a department of four librarians and staff to investigate and synthesize pedagogical practices, methodologies, and technologies for the UCSB campus community. They will also provide coordination of librarians throughout the Library who teach, supporting them to develop outcomes-based curricula and to partner with faculty on syllabus and research assignment design that promotes critical engagement with information. The director will work to foster an environment of innovation and experimentation.
The director will collaborate with the directors of other departments in the Learning & Engagement Division (Research & Engagement and Reference Services) and with other public-facing Library programs such as the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory and Special Research Collections. They will partner with the campus’s new Center for Innovative Teaching, Research & Learning (CITRAL), located in the Library, to engage directly with faculty around CITRAL’s main goals of improving learning in large classes, teaching and learning in a minority serving institution, and fostering information and data literacy.
The director will work with others to maximize the visibility and usefulness of Library resources and services in the campus course management system and will contribute to efforts to engage campus around issues related to textbook affordability and open educational resources.
The Director of Teaching & Learning will lead learning outcomes assessment and program level evaluation and refinement of the Library’s instructional program. They will participate in campus-wide assessment efforts related to Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation. The director will proactively reach out to campus administrators to promote the Library’s role in contributing to student success.
The director will be responsible for annual cycles of budget management, goal-setting, and performance evaluations.
At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s in library or information science, OR at least a Master’s degree in a related discipline; and
At time of application, at least five years’ relevant professional experience in an academic library setting.
Any experience researching, assessing, and implementing a new technology for instruction as demonstrated through work experience; and
Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and an optional but encouraged statement of diversity.
Experience planning and leading projects, teams, and new initiatives as evidenced by work experience;
Demonstrated experience with instructional design and assessment as evidenced by work experience;
Excellent oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
Demonstrated teaching proficiency and strong commitment to student learning;
Familiarity with current scholarly communication issues;
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment;
Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community;
Second master’s degree in Education or a related discipline;
Degree, certificate, or coursework in instructional design;
Experience working with campus course management systems; and
Comfort with digital scholarship and data science tools and practices.
