Curator, California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA), California, and the history of the American West (Associate or Full Librarian)
The University of California, Santa Barbara is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the Association of Research Libraries.
The UCSB Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to support current and emerging research strategies and methods of scholarly communication by developing collections and providing research services that support use of the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA), and the study of ethnicity and multiculturalism in California and the West. The successful candidate will actively work to maximize the strength of the UCSB collection in print, electronic, and emerging formats to support faculty and students’ research and scholarship across disciplines.
The expected effective date of the position is September 1, 2020 or later.
Reporting to the Director of Special Research Collections (SRC), the Curator is responsible for curating the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA). These unique collections document the lives and activities of various ethnic groups in California. The collections represent the cultural, artistic, ethnic, gender, and racial diversity that characterizes the state's population. Building on the foundation of CEMA and UCSB Library’s collection strengths in gender and ethnic studies, the Curator will also build relevant collections in the history of California and the Western United States. The Curator will work with other librarians to ensure that the resources curated in CEMA reflects the rich demographic diversity of California.
The Curator will direct and manage the appraisal, acquisition, and long-term preservation of primary source materials of historical value related to CEMA, California, and the history of the American West in all formats, including print, electronic, and born-digital materials. The Curator will establish intellectual control over archives and manuscripts collections, creating bibliographic access by overseeing arrangement and description according to accepted professional archival principles and practices. Working with the Director of SRC and the Library’s Director of Development, the Curator will identify prospective donors and fundraising opportunities, and will prepare and manage grants. The Curator will maintain effective donor relations, including leadership, consultation, and outreach about managing both analog and digital records.
Other curatorial duties include supporting the needs of the campus and the community through research consultations, instruction, tours, and other public services, and by serving as a liaison to select academic departments. The Curator will promote awareness and use of the collections through exhibitions, outreach, and the development of promotional and educational publications and web resources, including the re-formatting and duplication of visual materials for exhibition and preservation.
The Curator will supervise one full-time archives processing specialist and student staff, and will train and supervise special projects and grant staff as needed. The Curator will collaborate as needed with other Library units.
At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, OR at least a master’s degree in a related field with at least two years’ relevant professional experience; and
At time of application at least 2 years’ professional subject expertise curating multi-ethnic collections, including print and digital objects.
Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and an optional but encouraged statement of diversity; and
Demonstrated familiarity with archival metadata standards, scholarly repository platforms and technology tools including ArchivesSpace or similar tools as evidenced by work experience.
Ability to read and write in Spanish;
Demonstrated familiarity with national preservation/conservation standards for a variety of formats including born digital, images, sound, moving recordings, and analog and print formats;
Experience teaching primary source literacy, including visual literacy, to undergraduate and graduate students;
Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community;
Professional experience curating collections related to California and Western history;
Commitment to user-focused services and collection building as demonstrated through work experience;
Demonstrated collaborative and team building skills and the ability to work with a diverse group with a wide array of skills and expertise;
Effective project management skills, interpersonal skills, strong organizational, and communication skills;
Knowledge of current trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with digital content acquisitions and curation of special collections and archives;
Collection development experience building unique collections, and demonstrated leadership capacity to continue to grow CEMA and to build new collecting strategies targeted to expanding the scope of CEMA’s program to document other ethnic populations in California;
Experience working with legal and ethical issues affecting privacy, record restrictions, digital rights management, and access to special collections and archival materials;
Demonstrated record of professional engagement, including service to professional organizations, presentations at conferences, and peer reviewed publications;
Prior experience serving under-represented groups;
Supervisory and management experience in a special collections and archival environment;
Experience curating exhibitions from primary source collections; and
Familiarity with instructional standards, such as the Society of American Archivists Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy.
