The BioPACIFIC Materials Innovation Platform (MIP) is a mid-scale infrastructure program in NSF’s Division of Materials Research (DMR) designed to accelerate advances in biomaterials research and discovery. Envisaged as more than a suite of technical resources, BioPACIFIC seeks to integrate internal, external, expert, and novice users alike into the mission of discovery of new bioderived materials, and emphasizes intellectual capital, technique know-how, and collaborative spirit in connecting users to the tools and the researchers of the MIP. BioPACIFIC operates a user facility that provides unique materials, research equipment, samples, data, and technical services open to a diverse community of external researchers at various institutions and accessible through a proposal process and User Program.
Reporting to the Executive Director at UCSB of the NSF BioPACIFIC MIP, and working closely with the Executive Director at UCLA, the User Coordinator will lead BioPACIFIC’s User Program. Through administration of this program, the User Coordinator will (1) drive the recruitment of a diverse community of external users to the BioPACIFIC platform through both remote and in-person marketing activities, (2) work with the education leads to coordinate user education and training activities, such as the BioPACIFIC summer school, (3) coordinate visits by external researchers to BioPACIFIC, and (4) highlight key achievements from the BioPACIFIC user community resulting from utilization of the platform.
The User Coordinator will employ marketing strategies to recruit facility users, including coordinating and participating in events such as trade shows; fielding a booth at technical conferences such as American Chemical Society, Materials Research Society; travel to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and minority-focused conferences; and through ambassador partnerships with instrument builders that highlight tool deployment at BioPACIFIC facilities. The User Coordinator will also develop and implement promotional materials to promote awareness of BioPACIFIC in the scientific community and among funding agencies invested in biomaterials discovery.
The User Coordinator will also actively engage with users approved to conduct research at BioPACIFIC and promote a positive user experience by providing “concierge” services to potential users, connecting them with BioPACIFIC personnel for both preliminary technical discussions and for user training on equipment operation and laboratory safety once users arrive at BioPACIFIC, as well as through logistical services such as coordinating the submission of required business forms or helping visiting users to find appropriate housing near UCSB and UCLA. Upon completion of their research, the User Coordinator will work with users to create Highlight slides that will be reported to the NSF on a quarterly basis, incorporated in the BioPACIFIC MIP Annual Report, and showcased on the BioPACIFIC website, collect statistics about the MIP user program, including indications of demand for and usage of the MIP user facilities for reporting to NSF, and assist the Evaluation team in following up on user inputs to the Annual Report.
This appointment is renewable on an annual basis. Salary is dependent upon qualifications. The User Coordinator may be based in Santa Barbara County or remotely in Southern California including the Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas. A remote employee will be required to spend at least 1 day in Santa Barbara each week, unless otherwise agreed upon with the BioPACIFIC Executive Director.
