Position description

TEMPORARY LECTURERS IN ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES

The Department of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach courses in Asian American Studies for upcoming openings. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the department. All positions will be part time.

A Master’s Degree in Asian American Studies or related field is a minimum requirement; however, candidates with a PhD or ABD in Asian American Studies or related field (or equivalent degree) are preferred. In addition, at least one year of teaching experience is required.

Note: at the time of this posting, in order to comply with public safety measures to prevent the spread of covid-19, all courses taught through the University of California, Santa Barbara, are being taught remotely until further notice. Candidates with remote teaching experience will be preferred until in-person instruction resumes.

Successful candidates will be hired to teach one or two courses listed in the Department’s current curricular offerings. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach mental health, transnationalism, law and immigration, environmental justice, communities, and ethnographies from an Asian American studies perspective. Candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service are particularly encouraged to apply.

For more information, please review our list of course offerings available at

This posting will remain open until October 31, 2021 to accommodate department needs. If you would like to be considered after that time, and the pooled position is advertised again, you will need to submit a new application. Appointments for fall quarter are usually reviewed in May, winter quarter in October, and for spring quarter in February.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
