Position description

The Marine Science Institute at the University of California Santa Barbara seeks a highly-motivated postdoctoral research associate. The position will focus on ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) as a method to restore ecosystem services impacted by ocean acidification and to remove carbon dioxide from seawater.

The postdoctoral research associate will be based in Santa Barbara, California but remote work is possible while COVID-related shutdowns remain in place. The postdoc will join a dynamic research group led by Professor Iglesias-Rodriguez (https://labs.eemb.ucsb.edu/iglesias-rodriguez/debora/) and will also collaborate extensively with researchers at UCSB and potentially with European collaborators.

The appointed postdoctoral scientist will work on a recently funded project that seeks to generate the empirical foundation to elucidate the benefits and risks associated with OAE via olivine dissolution or the addition of quicklime. This is an urgently needed step to determine the likely feasibility of OAE to restore ocean pH in the field effectively and safely. The project will involve assessment of dissolution kinetics of pulverized carbonate and silicate rock, measurements of the chemical changes associated with OAE, and assessment of OAE impacts on marine microbes. A background in marine carbon chemistry is desirable.

Basic Qualifications: PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Oceanography, Marine Biogeochemical Modeling, Geology or closely related discipline at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidates will have:
-Advanced skills in inorganic carbon chemistry, microbial oceanography, data analysis, statistics, scientific coding/programming, and other quantitative methods
-Coding experience in R or equivalent programming language
-Demonstrated strong writing and presentation skills (a track record of talks and peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage).

The position start date is as soon as possible, but ideally no later than March 1, 2021. The initial appointment is for one year with the potential for renewal based on performance and availability of funding.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, a short (1-2 page) statement of research experience and interests related to the project, PDF copies of up to two relevant publications, and the names, affiliations, and email addresses of three references to:
