Position description

The Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab) is an interdisciplinary team of scientists based at UC Santa Barbara dedicated to bringing market-based solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. emLab conducts cutting-edge research and develops innovative policy solutions related to Ocean and Fisheries, Land and Freshwater, and Climate and Energy. Building on the success of the Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG), emLab’s Ocean and Fisheries program generates insights into the economics, ecology, and politics of oceans and fisheries to spur innovation in fisheries management, strategic marine spatial planning, and the blue economy.

emLab is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with a background in fisheries science, conservation planning and/or natural resource economics to conduct research and analyses to help solve real-world challenges through our partnership with the Blue Prosperity Coalition. The Blue Prosperity Coalition (BPC) is a network of global experts led by the Waitt Foundation and Waitt Institute. The BPC engages with governments around the world to implement marine spatial planning with a focus on the conservation and development of sustainable blue economies. We provide scientifically robust analyses to inform on-the-ground implementation of sustainable ocean planning and fisheries monitoring, management, and assessment. Countries in our current portfolio include Curaςao, the Azores, Tonga, Bermuda, the Maldives, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Samoa.

The Blue Prosperity Coalition (BPC) Postdoctoral Researcher will be an adaptable and creative problem solver who is excited about joining a team dedicated to providing scientific support to a global, on-the-ground marine conservation initiative. The successful candidate will have the ability to identify, adapt, and develop new methods and analyses as priorities and needs change over time. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to be self-directed and independent to keep up with a dynamic workstream and rapid deadlines, while also able to work well with a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have strong technical and analytical skills and can effectively communicate their work to stakeholders, scientists, and policy makers.

The BPC Postdoctoral Researcher will compile, synthesize, manage, and analyze data and relevant information to advance the sustainable fisheries management and marine conservation efforts of BPC and partner countries. They will lead and co-author research papers for peer-reviewed journals, present research results, and write science-backed policy briefs and internal reports to help inform decision- making in collaboration with the emLab BPC team. We currently have funding for this position for one year. It is anticipated that this position will end after one year, with an extension possible based on needs and funding availability.
