Position description

The National Center for Ecological Analysis & Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) seeks an Academic Coordinator with specialization in design and facilitation of highly interactive meetings and trainings. NCEAS facilitates synthesis research and collaboration in environmental science, ecology, and environmental data science, conducted as part of research initiatives led by NCEAS and Center Fellows. Center-level initiatives include the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP), the Long Term Ecological Research Network Communications Office (LTER-NCO), and an emerging initiative in support of a Masters in Environmental Data Science (MEDS).

This Academic Coordinator will work with the NCEAS Executive Director and other NCEAS staff and scientists to support and facilitate scientific collaborations across the Center and its scientific working groups.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate and facilitate highly engaging scientific collaborations
Organize and conduct trainings in virtual and in-person environments
Work with NCEAS staff to evaluate and improve current scientific collaboration and trainings

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in ecology, environmental science or a related field;

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with ecological science and environmental issues;
Four or more years as a scientific professional engaged in large, interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaborations;
Demonstrated effectiveness in facilitation and support of highly engaging scientific collaborations, including effective meeting facilitation in virtual and in-person environments;
Ability to coordinate and manage several projects/tasks at the same time;
Ability to translate complex scientific information and concepts to a variety of audiences, including the general public;
Ability to work well with a wide range of constituencies, including governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, industry, and communities;
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively;
Familiarity with standard document, graphic design, publishing, and virtual collaboration software.
Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Experience coordinating scientific collaborations across a diverse range of participants and time zones;
Demonstrated ability to organize and communicate scientific information and modes of collaboration in a way that is effective for multiple audiences and enhances accessibility and usability;
Experience teaching others how to host effective virtual and in-person meetings;
Strong networking and relationship-building skills and interest in building broad collaborations.
