Position description

The University of California, Santa Barbara SONGS Mitigation Monitoring Program is seeking a Research Ecologist in the Professional Researcher Series to oversee a long-term marine mitigation monitoring program. The researcher will join a team of UCSB scientists, science advisors, and California Coastal Commission (CCC) staff responsible for evaluating mitigation projects required by the CCC as a condition of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) coastal development permit. The mitigation consists of an artificial reef and a restored coastal wetland. Both projects have been constructed and long-term monitoring is being conducted to assess whether the mitigation projects meet specific performance standards required by the SONGS coastal development permit. The successful incumbent will work with other professional researchers to oversee the program, design the monitoring, analyze the data, provide written and oral reports on the monitoring results, and direct a science staff of 10 permanent employees and 6-8 seasonal workers responsible for data collection in the field, laboratory analyses and data management. The position is open rank, with salary and rank depending on applicant experience and qualifications. This position requires a Ph.D. in coastal ecology, restoration, conservation biology or related disciplines and professional qualifications and accomplishments consistent with the criteria for appointment and advancement in the Professional Researcher Series:(https://ap.ucsb.edu/policies.and.procedures/red.binder/sections/%5B3_12%5D%20Professional%20Research%20Series.pdf).

Preference will be given to applicants with 2+ years of postdoctoral research experience or equivalent in ecology and restoration of wetlands, kelp forests, or other coastal habitats, strong analytical and statistical skills, demonstrated proficiency in experimental design, excellent writing and communication skills, and experience in project management, public outreach, and in interfacing with resource managers.

Basic Qualifications:
• PhD in coastal ecology, restoration, conservation biology or related discipline

Preferred Qualifications
• 2+ years postdoctoral research experience or equivalent in ecology and restoration of wetlands, kelp forests, and other coastal habitats
• Strong analytical and statistical skills and a demonstrated proficiency in experimental design
• Proficient in data analysis and programming using R, SAS or similar language
• Excellent writing and oral communication skills
• Experience in project management
• Experience working with an interdisciplinary group of university, government and industry scientists
• Experience in public outreach and in interfacing with resource managers
• Minimum of five lead authored papers in peer-reviewed literature

Position will be located in north San Diego County. The UCSB SONGS Mitigation Program has an office in Carlsbad, California.

The position is 100% time; duration is set by biennial work plans with the expectation of a long-term appointment since there is a regulatory requirement for monitoring for 32 years. Anticipated start date is August 2021 and the initial appointment is for one year. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications.
