Position description

A Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbial Ecology and Evolution position is available in the Earth Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in a collaborative research project to develop new tools for enriching and isolating archaeal cells from complex microbial communities using flow cytometry, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Simons Foundation Project on the Origin of the Eukaryotic Cell. We seek a candidate with interests in microbial ecology, evolution, genomics and/or single-cell method development.

Work will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Alyson Santoro (https://santorolab.eemb.ucsb.edu) and in collaboration with international research groups at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Germany and Oxford University in the UK. The position will be based on the UC Santa Barbara campus, and work may require fieldwork at various regional locations around Santa Barbara county and/or sea-going work on a research vessel.

This is a full-time position. Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. The initial appointment is for one year with the potential for an additional year based on satisfactory performance and funding availability. The anticipated start date will be October 1, 2022, with some flexibility.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, evolution, or a related field , except the dissertation, by the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • A PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, evolution, or a related field is required by the time of the appointment.
Preferred qualifications

We are looking for candidates with extensive wet laboratory experience in one or more of the following areas: microbial growth and physiology, cell physiology, cultivation, microscopy, or flow cytometry. Demonstrated experience with method testing or development is desirable. The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills and willingness to work as part of a collaborative team.

Other desirable areas of study include: microscopy, experience in single-cell amplification, flow cytometry, microbial cultivation, sedimentary geochemistry, genomics and/or metagenomics, team science, demonstrated record of scientific publication, PCR, DNA Extraction, and independent research.
