Anticipated start: Summer/Fall 2022
Position duration: 8-9 months

Position description

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) invites applications for a qualified temporary Data Fellow to engage in data science projects relating to environmental science in the deserts of California. These projects will include assisting in the organization and analysis of data sets, developing R Shiny Apps, and synthesis in support of ecological synthesis and data science projects, and/or creating data products for local stakeholders including The Bureau of Land Management. The Fellow will work closely with NCEAS Senior Research Fellows, graduate researchers within the region, and project scientists. The Fellow will gather and analyze data and document processes and results from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, data repositories, and Modis satellite data. Research activities may include web scraping, collaboration with external scientists, and investigation and synthesis of environmental data. Fellows will assist in developing tools and resources that utilize these data, including data visualizations, data quality analysis, automated metadata creation, data semantics or data training. Development of tools and resources involves working in concert with data and computer scientists to devise and test user interfaces for the environmental science community. These tools and resources facilitate the processes surrounding documentation, analysis, and interpretation of environmental data.

Established in 1995 and located in downtown Santa Barbara, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) is a research center of the University of California, Santa Barbara and was the first national synthesis center of its kind. For over 25 years, NCEAS has been developing data science tools, supporting environmental research and training environmental scientists. There is broad acknowledgement that NCEAS has significantly altered the way ecological science is conducted, towards being more collaborative, open, integrative, relevant, and technologically informed.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • An MSc degree (or equivalent degree) in ecology, environmental science, computer science, or a related field at the time of application
Preferred qualifications
  • PhD degree in ecology, environmental science, computer science, or a related field at the time of application
  • Familiarity with ecological or environmental research
  • Experience in data management and/or analysis
  • Proficiency in a scientific computing language (R, MATLAB, Python)
