Position description

The Physics Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is seeking a Junior Specialist to pursue innovative research with Professor Andrew Jayich. The Junior Specialist will work on networking protocols for experimental physics as well as maintaining and upgrading the code based used through out the lab. The primary networking task will consist of developing a networking protocol where multiple computers may communicate with each other and with attached instrumentation. The protocol will need to have both synchronous and synchronous components.

The initial appointment is for 1 year.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's degree in Physics .

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Applicant must have expertise (at least 2 years) in Python programming language. The applicant must have at least one year of experience with trapped ion experiments and at least 6 months of experience in computer networking protocols, experience with asynchronous communication, and experience with collaborative coding work.

Preferred qualifications

It is preferable if the applicant has at least 2 years of experience with the following: small-scale (roughly 1 to 4 person) physics experiments; experience in quantum information science.
