The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) and our Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Office seek a Community Engagement Officer to lead initiatives to support and expand our existing networks and create new connections across science and management groups.
Your primary responsibilities will be to:
Lead NCEAS strategic community engagement efforts across diverse environmental science and ecology projects and audiences
- Help develop guidance and best practices around collaboration and inclusion in environmental synthesis and open data science
- Lead community engagement activities across a broad range of NCEAS-based projects
Advance NCEAS efforts to expand and enrich participation in environmental data science, synthesis science, and ecology and steward our DEIJ Strategic Plan
- Serve as a knowledge resource and share lessons learned and other outcomes with the scientific community and broader public
- Lead process for identifying and securing additional funds to implement DEIJ-oriented goals at NCEAS and beyond
Manage and guide the LTER Network Public Engagement with Science (PES) Working Group and Advisory Committee
- Work with LTER investigators, and site-based engagement managers to develop and share lessons learned and emerging practices in community engagement with science as part of a newly-funded project
- Assist with development of a system for assessing and evaluating community engagement
- Maintain and expand project website and resource library
This position will be located in person at NCEAS in scenic downtown Santa Barbara, California. Established in 1995, NCEAS is known for fostering interaction and collaboration, characteristics that lead to the success of its scientists. NCEAS has a growing and thriving community of postdocs, resident scientists, and analysts, and a frequent influx of leading scientists and practitioners from around the world participating in working group projects.
Salary and Benefits:
Academic Coordinator I, See Table 36 (https://ap.ucsb.edu/compensation.and.benefits/ucsb.salary.scales/36.pdf) for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70-$80K annual.

WORKING WITH THE LTER NETWORK OFFICE: The LTER Network Office (LNO) serves as a hub for the research synthesis, education, and outreach activities of the LTER Network and a first point of contact for organizations who may want to partner or engage with the Network. Established in 1980, the LTER Network now consists of 27 individual research sites across the United States which support ecological discovery on the influence of long-term and large-scale phenomenon. The LTER Network serves the wider community by making more than 40 years of sustained observations publicly available; providing long-term context and deep knowledge of place; engaging with community organizations and resource managers; and training hundreds of students in collaborative team science.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
- Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Community Engagement, or related field or equivalent work experience
- At least 1 year of work experience in community engagement around science for the Academic Coordinator I level
- At least 3 years of work experience in community engagement around science for the Academic Coordinator II level
- Experience with community management or with community groups
- Demonstrated leadership in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in science
- Experience applying science in historically excluded communities
- A commitment to championing, connecting, and supporting diverse science leaders across varying backgrounds, career stages, and cultural contexts (e.g. scientists, educators, policymakers)
- Experience with internet-based communication technologies, including social media, video conferencing, web-based streaming, and web discussion platforms
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated willingness to work to change institutional practices that present barriers to different groups
