Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 24B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimated full-time rate for this position at 100% time is $50,300 to 53,600 annually. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: 5/1/2023
Position duration: 1-year initial appointment, with the possibility of renewal annually based upon performance and/or funding.

Position description

Through the Institute for Energy Efficiency, a team of faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara with interdisciplinary expertise in climate, energy, and environmental policy is seeking a Junior Specialist to provide research and analysis support for 2035 Initiative activities. The 2035 Initiative is focused on building political and policy roadmaps to drive transformative climate and energy policy change. The Initiative builds on the success of existing environmental politics research labs at the University of California Santa Barbara, including the Energy and Environment Transitions (ENVENT) Lab, the Environment & Development Lab, the Energy Governance and Political Economy (EGAPE) Lab, the Anderson Research Group, The Smith Research Group, the Potoski Research Group, and a to-be-established Environmental Justice and Politics lab.

The Junior Specialist will work closely with the Initiative’s Director, Principal Investigators, and researchers working on domestic and international projects. We are looking for a detail-oriented research analyst with the ability and willingness to juggle a broad spectrum of analytical responsibilities and research tasks.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, coordinate and manage public opinion research survey, including management of complex survey sampling procedures and programming complex survey instruments
  • Collect, process, and analyze global, national and state-level political and policy data related to climate and energy policies
  • Provide statistical analysis and coding support for Initiative research, primarily in R
  • Visualize research results for public-facing reports and policy memos
  • Broadly lend support to the Initiative team where needed and tackle special projects where appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Bachelor’s degree in political science, statistics, sociology, economics, environmental studies, environmental science, public policy, public administration, communications, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications
  • Knowledge of environmental politics, policy, and institutions;
  • Ability to handle a diverse portfolio of responsibilities simultaneously, with speed, accuracy and courtesy;
  • Ability to plan and sequence tasks and projects;
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately analyze problems, gather relevant information, propose and implement practical solutions with varying levels of input from Initiative faculty
  • Experience with programming in R
  • Strong work ethic
