Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 37B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimate for this position is $73,300 - $98,100. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a full time Assistant/Associate Project Scientist with an anticipated start date of mid-late October 2023.

The Assistant/Associate Project Scientist will provide independent contributions to the planning, adaptation, and execution of experimental eukaryotic cell culture preparation techniques and technologies for structural investigations.

Responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Project Scientist will include:

  • Cultivating and maintaining eukaryotic cell lines to ensure optimal growth conditions and cell viability.
  • Performing advanced genetic manipulations using techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 and RNA interference for gene knockdowns, knockouts, and overexpression
  • Conducting live and fluorescence microscopy imaging and immunofluorescence staining
  • Guiding and training collaborators/lab members on all aspects of cell culture preparation and workflow adaptations for high-resolution structural studies.
  • Troubleshooting experimental challenges and optimizing protocols for cell culture and molecular biology experiments.
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures, results, and data analysis.
  • Staying updated with relevant scientific literature, incorporating and designing novel experimental techniques and technologies into the research workflow.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

To have a PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related field by the time of the application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • Experience in eukaryotic cell culture, including proficiency in maintaining diverse cell lines and differentiation protocols.
  • Experience in advanced genetic manipulation techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas9, RNA interference, and gene expression analysis.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy, live cell imaging, and fluorescence-based assays.

Applicants with 2 or more years of experience in the above categories will be considered for the Assistant level while applicants with 5 or more years of experience will be considered at the Associate level.

Preferred qualifications

To have 10 or more years of experience working as a Cell/Molecular Biologist engaging in cryogenic or room temperature correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) research in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology.
