Position description

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB)’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) invites applicants for a 100% time Assistant Specialist Position with the Arctic Options Research Team.

This multi-year project is an NSF-funded collaborative research project whose objective is to develop and demonstrate a science-guided process that will enhance the practice of governance for sustainability in Arctic coastal-marine systems. This international effort involves interdisciplinary data aggregation; geospatial analysis to reveal plausible development scenarios, international workshops to generate infrastructure and policy options, and applications to current issues of Arctic governance.

Responsibilities:
• Discover, gather, manage and analyze spatial and time-series data and associated metadata using already developed and novel approaches with R, Python and ArcGIS
• Maintain detailed, organized and clear documentation for all data analyses and products
• Lead writing efforts for publications in scientific journals
• Produce maps for a variety of audiences including scientific publications, reports, presentations and communication material

Qualifications
Minimum
• Master’s degree in environmental science or related field with a coastal or marine focus
• Extremely strong programming skills in R with experience using data packages such as dplyr, reshape, tidyr as well as data visualization with ggplot, ggvis, Shiny, Leaflet and others
• Experience performing spatial analyses in R using packages such as raster, sp, rgdal and more
• Experience with ArcGIS, Python, SQL
• Familiarity with GitHub, markdown
• Ability to multi-task

Desirable
• Record of publications in scientific journals

Start date is negotiable, but ideally June 1, 2015.

Salary and Benefits: Assistant Specialist Position, with salary step commensurate with qualifications. Full time appointment for two years from start date, with strong possibility for additional year of employment contingent upon performance. Full benefits package included.
