Jr. Specialist X-Ray Diffraction 10/1/15 – 9/30/16

Widely recognized as one of the top five materials research facilities in the world, the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) serves as the innovation engine for discoveries in new materials. World-class facilities are a cornerstone of the MRL and impact the academic and industrial research communities in California and beyond. As a vital MRL facility, the polymer characterization laboratory houses an impressive array of state-of-the-art polymer characterization and synthesis tools including GPC, hplc, GC, thermal characterization, rheometers, microwave reactors, etc.

We are in search for a qualified and driven individual for a Jr. Specialist position in the x-ray diffraction facility of Materials Research Laboratory to assist in the operation and management of the laboratory.

Job duties include:

Under the guidance of facility director, provide data collection and analysis training and support to facility users to perform x-ray diffraction measurements. Assist users in analyzing x-ray diffraction data in research projects. [40%]
In collaboration with other facility staff, develop new methods and tools to enhance the capability of x-ray diffraction facility. The emphasis is on developing new analytical methods, mathematical models and software packages for in-depth data analysis in support of multi-disciplinary materials research. [30%]
In collaboration with other facility staff, maintain x-ray diffraction tools and other laboratory equipment. Help maintain safety standards and perform other duties in support of facility operation. [30%]

The minimum required qualification is a B.S. degree in a physical sciences discipline with additional one-year experience working in a research analytical laboratory environment. Good hands-on lab skills, as well as a strong interest in lab training. The ideal candidate should have strong analytical and mathematical background.

Highly desired skills would be the capability to implement data analysis methods using MATLAB or other programming tools. Familiarity with x-ray diffraction instrumentation and analysis methods, especially Rietveld refinement tools, is highly desired.
