The University of California, Santa Barbara is seeking a research scholar with administrative expertise to work as project manager for an interdisciplinary cluster of endowed professors under the theme of “21st Century Global Dynamics.” Members of the cluster are funded by a generous gift from Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp initiative that supports the study of globalization with special emphasis on media, governance, religion, and civil society. The current chairs, Professors Janet Afary, Alison Brysk, Michael Curtin, and Jan Nederveen-Pieterse, also share interests in gender, human rights, political economy, and cultural representation. They are furthermore committed to the interdisciplinary study of globalization and therefore collaborate closely with colleagues in numerous departments and programs across campus.

We are looking for an enterprising scholar with managerial expertise who is well versed in the field of global studies. Reporting directly to the cluster’s lead professor, the coordinator will work with a team of faculty and graduate students to facilitate cluster activities and collaborate with campus and external partners. A PhD is required and candidates should be published in her/his field of expertise and currently engaged in a relevant program of scholarly research. Applicants should also have excellent oral, written, and web-based communication skills. We are especially interested in web-savvy applicants who can convey scholarly research in formats that are accessible to constituencies outside the academy. Internet, mobile, and/or social media skills are desirable.

Specific duties include: Administer cluster research projects, events, and publications; Oversee development of a website for the Mellichamp Global Dynamics cluster; Manage multi-platform publishing ventures; Provide leadership and oversight of graduate student researchers; Engage in grant writing and fundraising with faculty and university development staff; Coordinate activities with campus and external partners. The position is Academic Coordinator II at 100% time for 12 months, which is renewable based on satisfactory performance reviews. Full health and disability benefits are included.
