Lecturer in Hebrew (Full-Time)

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a lecturer position in modern Hebrew language beginning in the 2016-17 academic year. Responsibilities include teaching three quarters of Hebrew annually on the first- and second-year levels (six courses) plus two upper division undergraduate courses in any of these areas: modern Hebrew prose literature and/or poetry; contemporary Israeli film and communication media; conversation and communication. Within these areas, we are interested in literature of the Holocaust; Israeli women writers and feminism; the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as reflected in literature and film; and tensions between Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities as reflected in literature and film. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in relevant academic field; native command of Hebrew and English; and excellent record of teaching experience of undergraduates at the college level. Experience in coordinating programs highly desirable.

This lecturer position will complement a core faculty in the academic study of religion. The Department of Religious Studies offers a minor in Jewish Studies, which currently enables students to acquire a fundamental knowledge of biblical Hebrew, Jewish history and philosophy, Judaism in modern times, Jewish mysticism, and rabbinic literature.

The department is especially interested in candidates who contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
