The Center for Spatial Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is
seeking an Assistant Specialist who will assist the director in research on spatially enabled discovery of library resources. This research involves designing and implementing spatial discovery mechanisms for research data, through their geographic footprint, as well as through their thematic properties and associa- tions with publications. The work will extend an existing experimental open data platform, with the goal of augmenting library research tools. The candidate will also initiate and carry out the development of software demonstrators for the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory (IRC). The IRC needs to attract campus researchers by demonstrable benefits in terms of discovering, sharing, integra- ting, and analyzing research data. The research required involves working with domain scientists in archaeology, the digital humanities, and ecology (primarily) to develop use cases and demonstrations built around their data and research
questions. The candidate will assist in a variety of research management tasks, including identifying pertinent speakers for the bi-weekly ThinkSpatial brown bag, planning quarterly interdisciplinary coffee hours to address solicitations
for research proposals, and co-organizing a researcher meeting to be held in Fall 2016.
Basic qualifications: the candidate should possess a M.S. in Geographic Information Science or a related field; working knowledge of GIS (ArcGIS in particular, but also open source products), programming in Python and/or Java, and experience in interdisciplinary project work.
The appointment is for three months (April 1 to June 30, 2016) at 100%. The salary is based on UCSB’s salary scales and dependent upon qualifications.
Applicants should submit: 1) cover letter describing your research interests and relevant experience, 2) a current curriculum vitae, 3) contact information for 2 references including names, email addresses, and telephone numbers.
