Position description

The Technology Management Program at UC Santa Barbara, one of six academic units in the College of Engineering, seeks applications for adjunct Professor of Practice positions to enhance the quality and reputation of the program. Appointees in the Professor of Practice series are distinguished professionals, either practicing or retired. Professors of Practice help promote the integration of academic scholarship with practical experience. They provide faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students with an understanding of the practical applications of a particular field of study. Professors of Practice teach courses, advise students, and collaborate in areas directly related to their expertise and experience. The appointment would be effective July 1, 2016.

The Technology Management Program at UCSB is focused on the advancement of business knowledge and entrepreneurial practices in global technology-based companies. The program currently offers a one-year professional masters degree in technology management for exceptional students with engineering, science, mathematics, and quantitative social science backgrounds. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in concepts and skills critical to the management of both large and small technology companies. The goal of this highly selective professional masters degree is to propel qualified technical students to successful careers in technology business as innovative leaders. In addition the program offers an array of coursework in business and entrepreneurship for undergraduates. A doctoral program is also under development.

Part time and possibly full time candidates for the Professor of Practice positions are sought in the areas of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, High Tech Management and Business Development, and Venture Capital investing. An ideal candidate would span all three areas and should have a continued record of exemplary professional practice and leadership, preferably with extensive experience as an entrepreneur, high tech executive, and investor. Candidates will be evaluated based on their demonstrated professional competence and record of activity, their potential teaching contributions and prior teaching experience, and their potential for contributing to the research and service mission of the department. Appointees must have a well-established reputation for superior accomplishments. This may be evidenced by published works or presentations disseminated outside the scope of traditional scholarly journals and conferences, but otherwise subject to the same standards of quality and impact that govern other research contributions within the University. New adjunct faculty will be expected to participate in all phases of the program, including refining the curriculum, teaching courses, assisting with a new initiatives, and fostering interdisciplinary research activities on campus. Collaborations that integrate management, engineering, and social science perspectives are highly valued at UCSB.

The Technology Management Program resides within UC Santa Barbara’s highly ranked College of Engineering. UC Santa Barbara is a rapidly ascending major research university that boasts a uniquely interdisciplinary and collaborative culture. It is ranked 10th among the nation’s public universities by U.S. News & World Report, and several of its doctoral research programs are ranked in the top five in the country by the National Research Council. The College of Engineering faculty includes two of the university’s five Nobel Laureates, 19 National Academy of Engineering members, five National Academy of Sciences members, two Royal Society fellows, and a recipient of the prestigious Millennium Technology Prize. Nineteen College of Engineering faculty members are among the most highly cited authors in their fields. The College’s graduates have attained senior management positions in dozens of major corporations. More than 85 College of Engineering spin-off companies have generated over half a billion dollars in financing, merger, and acquisition activity in recent years.
