The Bren School of Environmental Science & Management ( invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, to start July 1, 2017. Applicants should possess a PhD or have completed all requirements for the degree by the time of appointment.

The Bren School of Environmental Science and Management seeks to fill two positions in Earth System Science at the Assistant Professor level. These positions will be two of four positions in a cluster hire in the area of earth surface processes at University of California Santa Barbara. For these positions we seek dynamic researchers who are at the forefront of advancing theory, measurements and understanding in terrestrial Earth Surface Processes from disciplines including climatology, geochemistry, geology, geomorphology, hydrology and soil science. The cluster hire will build on UC Santa Barbara’s existing strengths in physical geography and Earth and environmental sciences. Successful hires will contribute to improving our understanding of the characteristics and functioning of the entire planet, and especially its terrestrial surface through the study of the complex interactions among atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, including their alteration by, and impact on, human activity. We will give preference to candidates with demonstrated expertise in one or more quantitative techniques including field measurement, remote sensing, modeling, and theory

One of the foundations of the Bren School research and teaching program is the significance of global environmental change as a context for environmental management and policy-making. The study of terrestrial earth system science is an essential component of efforts to improve the habitability and sustainability of Earth’s surface environments. The Bren School is searching for promising physical scientists who are developing or advancing theory, measurements and understanding in terrestrial Earth System Science and whose research in Earth Surface processes can contribute, in collaboration with other Bren faculty, to effective environmental policies. Areas of specialization can include, but are not limited to, the study of geomorphological processes that alter coastlines and landscapes, mountain snowpack changes, global and regional climate and drought, soil and vegetation biogeochemical cycling and others.
The Bren School is a graduate school providing rigorous, multi-disciplinary training in environmental science and management to Master’s and PhD students. The faculty are drawn from the natural sciences, social sciences and management.
