UCEAP VISITING PROFESSOR
CHINA – Fudan University, Shanghai, Fall 2017

Through international academic experiences, the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) inspires students to explore and transform their lives, UC, and the world. Since 1962, UCEAP (eap.ucop.edu) has served as the UC systemwide international exchange program. Serving all UC campuses, UCEAP continues its support of the University of California’s mission through academic instruction and exchange relationships around the world. UCEAP is active in over 40 countries and currently enrolls over 5,000 students annually with 120 international partners and over 1,500 international students study on UC campuses as reciprocity students each year. More than 550 UC faculty have served as Faculty Directors, Visiting Professors and program instructors.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Global and International Studies (GIS) program at Fudan University consists of a series of English-language semester courses that concentrate on the study of the processes, manifestations, and debates of globalization. UC and Fudan University students take courses together, pursue research projects, and engage in critical thinking about globalization and its related impact on social, cultural, environmental, political, and economic issues.

The curriculum consists of upper-division, interdisciplinary and comparative courses which concentrate on globalization and the associated debates, international relations, economics, and culture of China. Courses are taught by UC faculty or may be, upon request, co-taught in English by Fudan University and UC faculty. Associated tutorial or discussion session provided by UC faculty.

ELIGIBILITY
Ladder-rank faculty in the social sciences or humanities are invited to apply for a teaching position in the UC-Fudan Global and International Studies (GIS) for Fall Semester, 2017.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Visiting Faculty – Chinese language ability desirable, but not required.

Students – There is no language prerequisite for students; instruction is provided in English.

FACULTY DISCIPLINES PREFERRED FOR THIS POSITION
Social Sciences (Global Studies, International Studies, Global Economics, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations, etc.) or Humanities (Cultural Studies, Literature, Media Studies, etc.) preferred, but all fields related to contemporary China will be considered.

TEACHING
UC Visiting Professor will be required to teach, or co-teach, the primary required course that constitutes the core course of the program curriculum. The core course is projected to have an average enrollment of 50 students, depending on student applications and interest. Faculty will have some latitude in determining the structure, content, and activities of the course listed below.

Debating Globalization: This core course is required for all UC students and may be co-taught with a Fudan University faculty member, dependent on identification of faculty member with similar or complementary interests. The course deals with the process of, and debates concerning, globalization, China's responses and contributions to globalization, the impacts of globalization on Chinese society, culture and economy, and the unique history and role of Shanghai in China, the Pacific region and the world. This course should capitalize on the Shanghai setting to encourage out-of-classroom exploration of Shanghai related to associated processes, changes, and developments. Course should be appropriate for accomplished, advanced undergraduates with no prior training in the discipline.

OFFICE LOCATION
The Fudan GIS is offered at the Handan campus of Fudan University in the Yangpu District of northeast Shanghai. The EAP Study Center is located on the Fudan University campus.

OFFICE STAFF

A UC Faculty Director and staff assist UC students and UC instructors with many details of the program.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
This position is a UCEAP Visiting Professorship rather than a UC Faculty (Study Center) Directorship.

COMPENSATION
Replacement Funds to Campus Department
Appointee remains on his/her home campus department payroll and continues to receive regular salary from the home department.

• UCEAP will provide the home campus with replacement funds in the total amount of $15,000 for the appointment term, with appropriate adjustment for a semester-campus faculty appointment. The home department will provide instructions to UCEAP regarding the appropriate account to credit with those funds.

• Benefits are provided in accordance with applicable University policies and are administered by each UC campus. UCEAP does not reimburse the home campus for any costs related to benefits or sabbatical accrual.

Travel

• UCEAP will provide individual airfare at lowest economy rate per pre-approved UCEAP Travel quote to and from California and the China for the term of residency.

• The Visiting Professor’s individual in-country travel expenses during the term of residency (lodging, meals, and transportation) are covered by the program budget.

• Transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the Visiting Professor.

• Business travel insurance coverage is provided by UC http://www.ucop.edu/risk-services/loss-prevention-control/travel-assistance/index.html.

Housing
UCEAP will provide reimbursement of lodging expenses concurrent with the appointment term, not to exceed $6,000. The Visiting Professor will need to locate and secure housing.

Relocation Expenses
UCEAP will provide a total maximum reimbursement of up to $500 for relocation/shipping/excess baggage upon submittal of appropriate documentation of expenses.

Visa/Residency Permit(s)
Costs to obtain or renew a visa/residency permit will be reimbursed by UCEAP (receipts are required). UCEAP does not process Visa applications.
