Position description

Through international academic experiences, the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) inspires students to explore and transform their lives, UC, and the world. Since 1962, UCEAP (eap.ucop.edu) has served as the UC systemwide international exchange program. Serving all UC campuses, UCEAP continues its support of the University of California’s mission through academic instruction and exchange relationships around the world. UCEAP is active in over 40 countries and currently enrolls over 5,000 students annually with 120 international partners and over 1,500 international students study on UC campuses as reciprocity students each year. More than 550 UC faculty have served as Faculty Directors, Visiting Professors and program instructors.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The UCEAP Program at UNAM enables UC students to enroll in this prestigious university in most fields of study. Most program participants are students of social science or humanities. Following an intensive language program, these students spend the fall or academic year attending three or four courses per semester.

An additional group of students in a Global Leadership Program will attend classes at UNAM before continuing to the UC Center in Sacramento for a related internship placement and additional coursework in public policy. This group will also follow an online Leadership Seminar offered from California.

A smaller group of students participates in a Field Research Program. They too attend an intensive language program during which they are also trained in basic research methodology and introduced to a number of professors from Mexican universities in Querétaro, Yucatán, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. During the semester these students proceed to one of the research sites overseen by these professors and carry out research, following the proposals they have created during the intensive language/methodology segment of the program.

The participation of the Visiting Professor in the early weeks of the Field Research Program is important both in terms of mentorship to the students, many of whom have little prior experience with real research, as well as in terms of camaraderie and a UC presence among the various instructors who will also shape the work of these students.

UCEAP has added a program track that will allow a different cohort of students to come for a summer Contemporary Mexico program that offers a political history of Mexico in English and Spanish language instruction. The Visiting Professor offers a cultural reflection course to this short-program group.

UCEAP has also added a Family and Community Health Program that runs during spring quarter. While the Visiting Professor will not have direct responsibility for this program, occasional consultation with staff in the systemwide EAP office and/or with local faculty and staff may help to assure program quality.

With the exception of the summer program, all coursework is normally in Spanish. All students are required to have at least two years of university-level Spanish and participate in the intensive program that precedes the semester. The Visiting Professor is required to oversee student academic issues in both programs, diplomatic university relations, and student welfare, including safety and security. One of the most important mentoring tasks of the Visiting Professor occurs during the early days of the intensive language program as the Field Research students refine their research proposals and consider their methodological plans.

The Visiting Professor also assists the short-term summer students by guiding a cultural reflections course in English during the early part of the program that runs concurrently with the above-mentioned methodological portion of the Field Research Program.
