JAPAN – Osaka University Summer 2018

Through international academic experiences, the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) inspires students to explore and transform their lives, UC, and the world. Since 1962, UCEAP ( has served as the UC systemwide international exchange program. Serving all UC campuses, UCEAP continues its support of the University of California’s mission through academic instruction and exchange relationships around the world. UCEAP is active in over 40 countries and currently enrolls over 5,000 students annually with 120 international partners and over 1,500 international students study on UC campuses as reciprocity students each year. More than 550 UC faculty have served as Faculty Directors, Visiting Professors and program instructors.

The UC Visiting Professor will be in residence at Osaka University over the eight-week summer term (mid-June through mid-August). During this time he/she will serve as UC liaison with the partner university and the UCEAP Tokyo Study Center; hold office hours; advise, and oversee UC student adjustment and academic issues; consult on program administration and future initiatives related to global and international education for Osaka University and UCEAP; and consult on emergency issues and specific cases related to student welfare, including health, safety and security. In collaboration with the Osaka University Cross-Appointment system, UC faculty are invited to engage in research consultations, seminars for Osaka and UC students, and develop collaborative relationships with Osaka University academic staff.

Mid-June through mid-August, 2018; UC faculty should plan to be on site for the full duration of the program.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Japanese language ability is advantageous but not required.

Open; preference will be given to UC faculty in the fields of engineering, sciences or Japanese language and cultural studies – the fields in which UC students will be studying at the partner university over the summer months.

Two UCEAP programs are run at Osaka University over the summer: an eight-week beginning program in Japanese language instruction, plus an eight week laboratory research program for students in the sciences and engineering.

This position is a UCEAP Visiting Professorship rather than a Faculty Directorship. The UC Visiting Professor has responsibility for advising regarding student academic concerns and providing counsel regarding the academic construct of the program. The UC Visiting Professor must also be willing to intervene in any emergency crisis situation involving UC students.

UCEAP will provide a stipend in the amount of $8,500 for the appointment term.

• Individual visa costs (if required) and provision of individual airfare for the Visiting Professor (lowest economy rate per pre-approved quote from UCEAP) to and from California and Japan for the appointment period.
• Transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the Visiting Professor.
• Business travel insurance coverage is provided by UC
UCEAP will provide reimbursement of actual lodging expenses for the appointment term, up to the amount of $5,000 for up to 8 weeks housing in Osaka. Osaka University will assist in sharing housing options.

Relocation Expenses
UCEAP will provide a total maximum reimbursement of up to $500 for relocation/shipping/excess baggage upon submittal of appropriate documentation of expenses.

Visa/Residency Permit(s)
Costs to obtain or renew a visa/residency permit if needed will be reimbursed by UCEAP (receipts are required). UCEAP does not process Visa applications.
