The English for Multilingual Students Program (EMS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach course(s) in EMS for the upcoming openings. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions available varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the program. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time.
The EMS Program offers four levels of undergraduate writing courses, enrolling domestic and international students whose home language is other than English; the majority of students are international. Placement is based on diagnostic essays from either the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) or the campus English Language Placement Exam (ELPE). Undergraduate course cap is 18 students. Lecturers will teach 1-3 undergraduate writing courses. Each course meets four hours per week, and requires substantial out-of-class preparation and grading. Instructors must also hold a minimum of two office hours per week and meet with individual students as needed to provide assistance on course assignments. Lecturers will also be expected to attend 2-3 scheduled faculty meetings per quarter.
The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are:
• MA or PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field
Additional qualifications required:
• Experience teaching college-level or college-preparatory writing courses at advanced levels for multilingual students (or mainstream courses including a significant number of multilingual students)
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching
• Knowledge of English grammar as it relates to the teaching of academic writing
• Experience teaching composition to students enrolled in college/university degree programs in the U.S.
• Background in second language writing theory and pedagogy
• Experience with materials development for academic English
• Familiarity with corpus-based resources (concordancers, collocation dictionaries)
• Teaching experience in classrooms with diverse (domestic/international) groups
