The Department of Education in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with primary expertise in high incidence Mild to Moderate Disabilities and research interests in STEM Education for Diverse Learners. The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE) is a diverse institution in a diverse community in a richly diverse state. The successful candidate for this position should have a Ph.D. in special education or related field and have a research focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, computer science, mathematics) for students with exceptional learning needs/differences, with a proven record of scholarly publication commensurate with professional experience, and potential for obtaining grants. We seek candidates who have a minimum of two years teaching experience or the equivalent with students with either identified disabilities or who are challenged by typical instruction. The successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring of M.A. and Ph.D. students, teacher education candidates and undergraduate students in the educational minors. We especially encourage applicants with expertise in inclusive STEM-related education issues or teaching and learning in diverse cultural contexts to apply. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.
More specifically, we seek a candidate who has expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) curriculum development and instruction, particularly adaptive curriculum that supports STEM instruction for students with mild to moderate disabilities; (2) universal design in STEM education; (3) multi-tiered models or systems of supports for both instruction and positive behavior support; (4) technology-based academic supports to help students with disabilities succeed in STEM-related K-12 courses and to help prepare them for STEM studies in higher education and beyond; and (5) use of culturally responsive and appropriate instruction to build from students’ strengths and to foster self-determination.
