Description

The University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a faculty position in the area of sustainability science for emerging technologies, to start July 1, 2018 or later. Technologies not only provide goods and services but also have a profound impact on the environment. There are a number of emerging technologies that have the potential to markedly reduce the human footprint at the global level, in terms of energy, water, emissions of contaminants and other impacts. We seek an individual whose research involves quantitative evaluation of the relationship between emerging technologies and the sustainable provision of goods and services. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent at the time of hire.

To address the relationship between technology and the environment, the University of California, Santa Barbara has approved a cluster of four endowed chair positions with a common theme of “Sustainable Materials and Product Design”. The research interests of other chair holders encompass green chemistry, sustainable manufacturing, and sustainable catalytic processing. This faculty position, “Sustainability Science”, will be hosted by the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, although joint appointments can also be considered. All four Chairs are expected to work together closely to foster broad and interdisciplinary research and education in chemical and technological sustainability.

We welcome research focused on technology evaluation, choice and design, policy design and evaluation, the governance of technology development and innovation, and other related areas of research. Experience in sustainable development of emerging economies is desirable. The successful candidate will bring a strong research program around more sustainable technologies based on quantitative analyses.
