A position at the post-graduate level is available in the Earth Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the area of environmental water quality related to quantifying and determining sources of fecal and chemical pollution in coastal environments including watersheds. Duties include, under supervision and within a team environment: developing and applying quantitative models referencing geographic information system (GIS) databases to evaluate water pollution sources; developing and applying R-based statistical analysis and graphical representation of water quality data; using quantitative modeling to assist field and laboratory research in microbiological and chemical water quality; directly performing field and laboratory research.

The position is full time and offers a competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for one year. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and funding availability. The ideal start date for the position is January 15, 2018. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

Basic qualifications: Applicants must have an earned Masters or 5 years equivalent experience in geography, environmental science and management, environmental engineering, ecology, geology or related sciences.

Additional qualifications: Strong experience in GIS, statistics, and quantitative analysis and display of environmental data. Excellent written and oral communication skills, professional conduct, and experience in assisting with field and laboratory research are essential. Appointees should have experience working independently under supervision, and also collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated experience with appropriate field and laboratory methods in environmental water quality research and monitoring.
