DATA SERVICES AND DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP LIBRARIAN

The UC Santa Barbara Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to foster excellence in digital scholarship and teaching through the delivery of innovative reference and instructional services to the campus community in the areas of social media, textual, numeric, and demographic data. The successful candidate will support data- and computation-intense researchers in the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory (“Collaboratory”), UCSB Library’s new digital scholarship and data support center, and serve as the Library’s expert on the lifecycle of social media data. The expected effective date of the position is July 1, 2018 or later.
Reporting to the Director of the Collaboratory, the Data Services and Digital Scholarship Librarian develops and implements programming that supports data-centric research across the disciplines, including workshops, online learning objects, and course-connected instruction; develops the Library’s research social science data collection; provides consultation services for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in all Collaboratory areas, including but not limited to social science, spatial, and social media data; engages in extended project work with faculty researchers; consults on scholarly communication issues, particularly in regards to appropriate use and stewardship of research data; and maintains active Software Carpentry trainer certification (https://software-carpentry.org/).
The Data Services and Digital Scholarship Librarian works individually and as part of the Collaboratory team to contribute to creative and innovative approaches to advancing and promoting the Collaboratory's services; participates in an active instructional program, including developing and delivering presentations to specialized undergraduate and graduate courses; creates and maintains online guides to specialized Library resources, including but not limited to Twitter data acquisition and analytics platforms; and designs workshop curriculum and learning objects for Software, Data, Library, and/or Author Carpentry.
Participating in the Social Sciences Collection Group, the Data Services and Digital Scholarship Librarian has responsibility for all aspects of collection management and development for social sciences data. Collection development and access responsibilities include selection, assessment, and lifecycle management of scholarly information resources that support scholarship and teaching; through responsible stewardship of allocated collection funds, ensures maximum effectiveness of the Library’s investment in collections in order to provide the greatest value for successful research and learning outcomes; recognizing the unique strength of interdisciplinary scholarship on the UC Santa Barbara campus, works collaboratively with subject librarians in related areas to develop scholarly collections and provide access to resources that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and support new fields of inquiry. This position may take on additional collection management assignments based on Library needs.
•ALA-accredited Master’s in Library or Information Science, or a graduate degree in a social science field with knowledge of digital scholarship issues as applied in a research library setting.
•Academic background or knowledge of the social sciences demonstrated through undergraduate or advanced degree coursework, or work experience;
•Demonstrated experience in contemporary digital scholarship or data services practices and techniques, including but not limited to web scraping, data visualization, text analysis, and quantitative data analysis in a scripting environment such as R or Python;
•Understanding of current and emerging trends in data- and computationally-intense social sciences research;
•A strong user focus and the ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing, technical, collaborative, and culturally diverse environment;
•Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
•Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity and/or inclusion in the workplace and/or community.
•At least two years of experience in an academic library;
•Demonstrated experience with instructional design concepts, practices, and tools in an academic library setting;
•Software or Data Carpentry trainer certification.

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
