Polymer Chemist - Associate Specialist - Materials Research Laboratory - DOW Materials Institute

World-class shared experimental facilities are a cornerstone of the Materials Research Laboratory, impacting the academic and industrial research communities at UCSB, California and beyond. As a vital MRL facility, The DowMI brings together researchers from across UCSB’s Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering departments to work on fundamental challenges that are of interest to industry and academia. The high impact research projects center around the theme of function by structural design, with applications areas that range from next generation microelectronics to high performance commodity polymers.

To meet the research and project management needs of these programs, we are looking for a motivated polymer chemist (Associate Specialist) to join our team. This appointment is for 2 years with the possibility of renewal. The expected date of employment is July 2018. The position requires expertise in the coordination of research activities between universities and between university and industrial partners, day-to-day running of a facility for Nanomaterials Production under SOP conditions, supply of materials for in-vivo testing and the ability to perform monomer synthesis and anionic ring-opening, living radical and other controlled polymerizations. The applicant appointed to this Associate Specialist position will make significant contributions to academic publications through original research and collaborative projects within the MRL

Minimum requirements
• Appointees to this series must possess a doctorate or its equivalent at the time of initial appointment in chemistry, chemical engineering or related fields

Additional requirements
• Possess practical experience in and basic understanding of polymer characterization and synthesis
• Proficient knowledge of computers and software

Desirable requirements
• Mentorship/supervision of junior researchers and students
• Independent performance of tasks with minimum supervision
