Position description

The Marine Science Institute is seeking a highly qualified Junior Specialist in riparian ecology to work with the Riparian Invasion Research Lab. The position will involve planning, designing, and executing our research experiments to evaluate methods for managing invasive riparian plants and facilitating the restoration process. An emphasis will be placed on experience with plant and arthropod ecology, targeted at conducting experimental studies of biological control technologies for wildland systems.

The incumbent will help to plan, implement, monitor, analyze data, and write reports on weed control and restoration activities as part of our riparian restoration research projects in Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara Counties. Duties will also include conducting weed control, arthropod rearing, native and non-native plant propagation, supervising student research assistants and volunteers, and monitoring of research and restoration treatments.

The incumbent will assist by managing and analyzing resulting datasets and will participate in preparation of peer-reviewed manuscripts, public documents, grant proposals, and overseeing the technical reporting requirements of our grants and contracts.

Candidate must have a strong desire to work on interdisciplinary problems with a diverse team of investigators, students and non-academic colleagues.

*Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field (Ecology, Biology, Entomology)

*Additional Qualifications:
-Two+ years of experience in field ecology, experimental design and execution, data management and statistical analysis

*Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with monitoring environmental programs and field experiments
-Knowledge of taxonomy, identification and biology of California plants and arthropods
-Familiarity with the theory and practice of biological control of invasive species
-Experience with preparing peer-reviewed publications and technical reporting requirements for grants and contracts, and data presentation through written reports and oral presentations
-Experience with GIS and GPS technologies
-Adept at working in a research team, and managing field research activities

Special Conditions:
-An incumbent will encounter field conditions that can be hot, dusty or wet so applicants must be willing and able to work in these types of field conditions.
-Applicants must have a good driving record with CA driver’s license
-Familiarity with vehicular use on unpaved routes.

The anticipated start date for the position is October 1, 2018. The duration of the appointment is for 100% time for 12 months; reappointment is possible depending on performance and funding. Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
