Position description

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture, University of California Santa Barbara, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in The Arts of Colonial to Contemporary Latin America beginning July 1, 2019. We seek a colleague whose research makes new contributions to the understanding of visual culture of Latin American in any era from the early colonial period to the contemporary. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in art history, architectural history, or a related discipline by the time of the appointment. A research specialization in Colonial to Contemporary Hispano- or Lusophone Latin America, in which the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong theoretical grounding, is required. Expertise in Mesoamerica, with the versatility to teach widely in both chronological and geographic terms, as well as in a range of media, is highly desirable. The successful candidate will teach a wide variety of courses ranging from undergraduate surveys to advanced graduate seminars and will contribute to the departmental areas of focus in Art and Architecture of the Americas, as well as one or more of the following: Modern and Contemporary Art and Architecture, Art and Architecture of the Early-Modern World, and the undergraduate emphases in Museum Studies and/or Architecture and the Environment. UC Santa Barbara encourages interdisciplinary studies and there will be opportunities for engaging with departments and programs such as Anthropology, Chicana and Chicano Studies, Renaissance Studies, History, Latin American and Iberian Studies, and Spanish and Portuguese.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
