FACULTY DIRECTOR, ITALY
Administrative Appointment
Two-Year Term, Partial Year Residency (Fall Terms) 2020-22

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Reporting to UCEAP’s Associate Vice Provost & Executive Director, and in close collaboration with the Regional Directors in UCEAP’s Goleta Systemwide Office, the UC Faculty Director oversees EAP’s programs abroad, represents the University of California to host universities, and at some sites work with third-party providers responsible for various program elements. Study Center Directors must fulfill academic and administrative functions, including oversight of student safety, security and conduct. The UC Faculty Director oversees student academic issues, arranges or supervises independent study projects and internships, manages host university relations, and is available to the Study Center staff members for consult on student welfare issues, including safety and security.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
In Bologna and Milan UC students enroll in regular host university courses for a semester or a year. In Bologna study in a wide range of fields is available and instruction is in Italian and/or English; in Milan students are in business or economics and a large number of courses are available in English. In both locations, programs begin with an intensive language program.

The UC construct programs in Rome are specially designed for UC and taught in English by local instructors. Students attend classes with UC students only. Most options in Rome include language study and students also enroll in two or three core courses in the humanities and social sciences designed to use the city of Rome to understand the history, culture, and politics of ancient and modern Italy. Students may also opt to do an internship.

The programs in Florence are also specially designed for UC students and offer two options: intensive Italian language study at the first year level and Italian area studies courses taught in English by local instructors. Students attend classes with UC students only. The program is offered in the summer, winter quarter, fall and spring semesters.

The European Transformations multi-city spring quarter program takes place in Madrid and Rome and courses taught in English introduce students to the social and political changes that have taken place in Spain and Italy in recent decades while examining current challenges facing both countries. Students spend 5 weeks in each city. The Mediterranean Politics, Food & Culture multi-site program takes place in Barcelona, Sicily, and Florence in the fall semester. The program uses food as a lens to explore the politics and culture of the Mediterranean world. Students spend 5 weeks at each site.

A new UC construct summer program led by a UCSB faculty member is offered for the first time in summer 2019. Crossroads of Culture in the Mediterranean invites students to learn about the history of southern Italy from antiquity to the modern era and the cultural and ecological environment of its Mediterranean setting.

APPOINTMENT TERM & RESIDENCY
July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2022
Residency in Bologna, Italy from mid-September through mid-December in 2020 and 2021; remote instructor of record duties (upon return to campus) from January-June, 2021 and 2022.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

• Director – Fluency in Italian is required.

• Students - The prerequisite for students studying in Bologna who wish to take courses taught in Italian is two years of university Italian or the equivalent. There are no language prerequisites for participation in the other programs in Italy.

TEACHING
The Director is required to teach a course through the Study Center in Bologna for UC students during the fall term. The director is also consulted on the selection of local faculty teaching in the Florence and Rome programs, together with a UC faculty advisory committee and the UCEAP Systemwide Office.

OFFICE LOCATION
The UC Study Center is centrally located in Bologna close to some University of Bologna departments and a 10-15 minute walk from most other departments.

OFFICE STAFF

Two full-time support staff at the UC Study Center in Bologna and a UC Academic Director in Rome. In both Rome and Florence, UCEAP works with ACCENT International Consortium for Academic Programs Abroad to provide on-site logistical and academic support for the UC programs.

RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE
Managed by the host universities and UCEAP in California.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Oversight of study centers and programs in Rome and Florence is undertaken using primarily remote means of communication. Travel between all three locations will be only periodic. Study Center staff will manage the routine academic and administrative responsibilities of the local programs. Knowledge of Italian institutions strongly recommended.

The appointed Director must have excellent managerial skills including ability to delegate tasks effectively and to work effectively, efficiently, and collegially with a professional staff while concentrating her or his efforts on the academic programs and UC diplomatic relations and communications with partner universities.
The UC Faculty Director will also assist UCEAP and the campus EAP offices in recruiting students to the programs administered by the Study Center. This assistance may include developing information about the programs that will attract students, responding to applicants’ and advisers’ inquiries, and corresponding with students selected for the programs.

COMPENSATION

Replacement Funds to Campus Department
Director remains on his/her home campus department payroll and continues to receive regular salary from the home department.

• UCEAP will provide the home campus with replacement funds in the total amount of $18,333 for each of the two terms (August to December) of the appointment term. The home department will provide instructions to UCEAP regarding the appropriate account to credit with those funds.

• Benefits are provided in accordance with applicable University policies and are administered by each UC campus. UCEAP does not reimburse the home campus for any costs related to benefits or sabbatical accrual.

Stipend
UCEAP will provide a stipend of $5,000 in consideration of the continuing responsibilities following the in-country residency period.

Travel

• UCEAP will provide individual airfare at lowest economy rate per pre-approved UCEAP Travel quote to and from California and Italy for each term of residency. Additional baggage/shipping fees will be reimbursed for actual expenses up to $500 for outbound travel and up to $500 for return travel.

• The Visiting Professor’s individual in-country travel expenses during the term of residency (lodging, meals, and transportation) are covered by the program budget.

• Transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the Visiting Professor.

Housing
UCEAP will provide reimbursement of lodging expenses concurrent with the appointment term, not to exceed $6,000. The Visiting Professor will need to locate and secure housing.

Visa/Residency Permit(s)
Costs to obtain or renew a visa/residency permit will be reimbursed by UCEAP (receipts are required). UCEAP does not process Visa applications.

Other Considerations
UCEAP does not reimburse the home campus for any costs related to health and welfare benefits or sabbatical accrual; please note that vacation time is not accrued during UCEAP service. Due to coverage limitations of some UC health insurance plans, Directors may choose to change health insurance plans for the period they reside abroad, affecting monthly premiums, deductibles and plan coverage. UCEAP does not offer supplemental insurance coverage.

Business travel insurance coverage for Directors and traveling companions is provided through UC http://www.ucop.edu/risk-services/loss-prevention-control/travel-assistance/index.html.
