Description

The English for Multilingual Students Program (EMS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach course(s) in EMS for the upcoming openings. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions available varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the program. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time.

The EMS Program offers four levels of undergraduate writing courses, enrolling domestic and international students whose home language is other than English; the majority of students are international. Placement is based on diagnostic essays from either the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) or the campus English Language Placement Exam (ELPE). Undergraduate course cap is 18 students. All courses offer four units of credit toward degree. Please see our program website (www.ems.ucsb.edu) for more information.

Lecturers will teach 1-3 undergraduate writing courses per quarter. Each course meets four hours per week, and requires substantial out-of-class preparation and grading. Instructors must also hold a minimum of two office hours per week and meet with individual students as needed to provide assistance on course assignments. Lecturers will also be expected to attend 2-3 scheduled faculty meetings per quarter.

The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are:
• MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field at the time of application

Preferred qualifications:
• PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field at the time of appointment
• Experience teaching composition to students enrolled in college/university degree programs in the U.S.
• Background in second language writing theory and pedagogy
• Experience with materials development for academic English
• Familiarity with corpus-based resources (concordancers, collocation dictionaries)
• Teaching experience in classrooms with diverse (domestic/international) groups
• Knowledge of English grammar as it relates to the teaching of academic writing
• Teaching experience involving a minimum of one college-level or college-preparatory writing course for multilingual students (or mainstream course with multilingual students)
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

To apply, please go to the following link: https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/apply/JPF01375. Applicants should submit a cover letter, teaching statement, resume or CV, evidence of teaching effectiveness and complete contact information for three references who are familiar with your college-level composition teaching experience. All applications must be submitted through the UC Recruit. Applicant reviews will begin as soon as November 16, 2018.

The posting will remain open until October 31, 2019 to accommodate department needs. Appointments for fall quarter are usually reviewed in August, winter quarter in November, and for spring quarter in February (if applicable). The pool will close on October 31, 2019; if you would like to continue to be considered after that time, and the pooled position is advertised again, you will need to submit a new application.

Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. See the review date specified in UC Recruit to learn whether the department is currently reviewing applications for an upcoming opening. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.
