Description

The Department of Education in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) seeks a Tenure-track teaching faculty, formally listed as a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment, with expertise in Mild to Moderate Disabilities. The successful candidate will have her or his primary teaching responsibilities in the Teacher Education Program. She or he will prepare both general education and special education preservice teachers to teach all subjects to K-12 students with mild to moderate disabilities. The candidate will also be expected to participate in developing and supporting a new teacher credential program which aims to integrate the preparation of teachers in special and general education in order to increase educational equity and inclusion for students with disabilities. The candidate will be encouraged to engage in professional activities that address the critical need for teachers trained in special education and inclusion at the local, state, and national levels.

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education is part of UC Santa Barbara, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and located on the Pacific coast 90 miles north of Los Angeles. The GGSE is a diverse institution in a diverse community in a richly diverse state. UCSB is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and was the first member of the AAU to attain the status of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Despite focused efforts over the years, educational equity in California remains an elusive goal. As a land grant institution, GGSE at UCSB is deeply committed to centering diversity in our work. In addition to finding faculty who bring scholarly expertise in the areas that are described below, we also want candidates for positions in GGSE to demonstrate how their scholarship, teaching, and service will help us achieve our mission to serve diverse populations in our region, state, and nation in ways that allow us to achieve educational equity. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

The GGSE offers M.A.s and Ph.D.s from the Department of Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology and the Department of Education, and M.Ed.s from the Teacher Education Program, which also prepares students for teaching credentials. The School also offers three undergraduate minors in Education, Applied Psychology, and Science & Mathematics Education.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a doctorate in special education or a related field by the appointment date, July 1, 2019. Additional requirements include:

  • Minimum of two years experience teaching either students at the K-12 level or prospective and/or practicing teachers
  • Expertise in accreditation and teacher education programs, particularly towards integrating the preparation of general education and special education teachers
  • The potential to work productively with undergraduate students, K-12 teachers and administrators, and with UCSB faculty across departments
  • The potential to work effectively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds representing the state of California.

Preferred requirements:

  • Two years teaching experience or the equivalent
  • Experience in teacher education working with both general and special education candidates
  • Experience in educational research related to special education and/or inclusion
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) curriculum development and instruction; (2) universal design for learning; (3) multi-tiered models or systems of supports for both instruction and positive behavior support; (4) technology-based academic supports to help students with disabilities; and (5) use of culturally responsive and appropriate instruction to build from students’ strengths and to foster self-determination.
