Position description

The College of Letters and Sciences, along with the Institute for Social Behavioral and Economic Research, at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for an Academic Coordinator I position. This is a full-time, calendar-year position. The initial appointment will be through June 30, 2020.

Directors of the Centers representing the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, are seeking an Academic Coordinator to administratively prepare, develop, and implement a range of events, including talks, workshops, and conferences. The Academic Coordinator also documents and manages an ongoing process intended to create synergies and shared projects among these three Centers, as well as with the Orfalea Center, while maintaining their independence by identifying and developing collaborative opportunities for research funding. The Academic Coordinator also pursues relationships with local K-12 schools for the purpose of Center-related outreach, as relevant.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Coordination of a year-long internal process of dialogue and collective work among the participants in this area studies / global studies endeavor.
  • Planning, advertising, graphics, logistics, and administration for approximately 50 sponsored events and 3-6 small conferences.
  • Helping to develop and coordinate Center-related community outreach efforts.
  • Overseeing e-mail communications/announcements to be sent to affiliated faculty members, graduate students, alumni, and majors, as relevant.
  • Maintaining and updating Center websites, as relevant.

Directors of the Centers are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum qualifications: The minimum requirement to be considered an applicant is the completion of all requirements for an MA (or equivalent terminal degree) at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications: Degree in an area studies department or related discipline, at least one year of administrative experience, completed or near-completed Ph.D., experience working in, or awareness of the conversations in, area studies, and grant writing experience.
