Position description

UCSB’s Environmental Studies Program is hiring an assistant or associate professor whose research in Earth Systems Science explicitly links to human systems in a changing world. Special consideration will be given to scholars with a background in hydrological sciences, engineering, or geomorphology whose work focuses on the link between freshwater and global environmental change.

Applicants should have a record of scholarship, teaching, service, and professional activities that places a clear emphasis on (a) freshwater systems and related risks to humans and the environment from global change, such as patterns of land use, development, and/or changing climate; (b) solutions to enable more just, resilient, and sustainable futures in the context of freshwater related natural disasters (e.g., drought and scarcity, flooding, landslides); or (c) the impact of human activities (e.g., mining, agriculture, urban growth, infrastructure development) on geomorphic settings that influence hydrology and water availability. The candidate should employ quantitative research methods AND have (a) demonstrated collaboration in the social sciences or the humanities OR (b) a record of engagement (e.g., co-authoring reports or publications, collaboratively running workshops or conferences) with key stakeholders from their study region(s). Scholars who employ quantitative research methods and have experience with qualitative research methods are especially encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate for this position will teach classes that support the Hydrologic Sciences and Policy major within the Environment Studies Program. The focus of the Hydrologic Sciences and Policy major is to provide students with knowledge and skill-based training needed to understand and solve complex hydrologic problems at the intersection of our social systems and at local, regional, and global levels. The Hydrologic Sciences and Policy major provides a rigorous framework for students to examine the hydrologic process in our environment and in our socio-economic systems in a changing climate. Programmatic teaching needs include: (1) introductory skill-based courses focused on data collection and analysis, field methods and techniques, and collaborating with stakeholders, all within the water resources context; (2) a course focused on water resource related natural disasters, their risks, and how they intersect with human resilience and development; and (3) courses that focuses on assessing earth system processes through local and regional stakeholder concerns and engagement.

In 2023-24, a wide array of UC Santa Barbara departments is partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African American mathematician, astronomer, anti-racist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, with the goal of diversifying faculty, research, and curriculum, the Banneker Initiative aims to recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work would take place within the community of interests exemplified by Banneker’s intellectual, ethical, and social commitments as an African American scientist. Applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities, including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program, proposal writing training, and seed grants.

Responsibilities of UC faculty members include producing cutting-edge research, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, recruiting, supervising, and mentoring students, and participating in university service and other professional activities.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Successful candidates (for the Assistant Professor Level) must have completed their PhD (or equivalent) at the time of appointment.

Successful candidates (for the Associate Professor Level) must currently hold a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor at the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

Candidates should have a record of multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary quantitative research focused on freshwater resources. Evidence of stakeholder engagement or collaboration with researchers in the social sciences or humanities is preferred. Evidence of potential excellence in teaching is desired. Preferred candidates will have been recognized for their teaching skills and will have demonstrated teaching experience related to Earth Systems.
