Percent time: 33-100% Depending on funding and instructional need
Anticipated start: Fall 2024 or later

Position description

LECTURERS IN HEALTH JUSTICE & COMMUNITY
The Health Justice and Community initiative at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for qualified lecturers with strong research training and innovative pedagogic experience to teach courses in critical health justice. This initiative is currently housed in the Department of Exercise and Sport Studies, which is undergoing curricular transformations and focusing on the social, cultural, and political foundations of health justice.

Positions may be part-time or full-time depending upon the needs of the department and funding availability.
Ideally, the successful candidate will be hired to develop and teach both small and large courses as part of the Department’s new curricular offerings, including an introductory course on health justice & community. We are especially interested in candidates whose scholarly interests go beyond standard biomedical and public health approaches to teach interdisciplinary health justice centered courses on such topics as: critical disability studies, food justice, environmental/climate justice, health disparities/policy, reproductive care, indigenous knowledge production, community healing practices, migrant health care, medical racism/apartheid, colonial medicine, etc.
And, while an on-going research agenda is not expected of this position, the candidate must show evidence of strong research training in order to teach research methods (qualitative/humanistic or quantitative) as part of their teaching repertoire.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Master’s Degree from an accredited university or college in a social science or relevant interdisciplinary field such as feminist, queer, global, ethnic and/or American studies is a minimum requirement. Candidate must have at least one year of teaching experience.

Preferred qualifications

Ph.D. trained in a social science or relevant interdisciplinary field or completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in a social science or relevant interdisciplinary field except dissertation at the time of application. Strong record of innovative, community-engaged teaching desired.
