Position title: Assistant Specialist
Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table 24B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimated full-time rate for this position at 100% time is $61,900 - $70,100 annually. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: September 2024 or later
Position duration: Initial appointment is for one year, 100% time with benefits. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The laboratory of Dr. Kenneth Kosik in the Neuroscience Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a full-time Assistant Specialist. The successful candidate will be involved in performing animal surgery, setting up neuronal cultures, preparing brain organoids, optimizing brain organoid techniques, characterizing neuronal cultures and brain organoids immunocytochemically, communicating results and preparing reports.

Appointees to the Specialist series engage in specialized research, professional activity, and University and/or public service. Specialists use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions to the research enterprise of the University and to achieve recognition in the professional and scientific community. Appointees at the Assistant Specialist level enable research as part of a team and may provide some independent input into the planning and execution of the research.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A master's degree in biology or related field is required.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

A minimum of 5 years of post graduate experience in the biomedical field.

Preferred qualifications
  • PhD degree in biology or related field preferred.
  • Advanced training in the biomedical field.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of neuroanatomy.
  • Experience with sterile techniques.
