Position description
The Associate Directorship
The Associate Director (ACII) assists Las Maestras Center’s Director to develop and implement initiatives, programming and partnerships consistent with the vision of LMC; that is, its emphasis on conscienced public engagement crafted by people of color art praxis. These include: an on-going artist-in-residence program, graduate seminars, creative writing and arts workshops, inter-collegiate exchanges, and ceremonial gatherings. LMC also curates ongoing public engagements, such as the Latinx Public Voice series, Xicana[x] Indigenous Values conversations and research initiatives, the Transnational Women of Color Feminism Living Digital Archive project, and more. Successful candidates must be fluent in Spanish.
The Associate Director also assists the Director in managing public relations and community outreach to the community, and helps develop strong working relationships with relevant departments, campus units, community organizations, related centers at other institutions, academic organizations, and granting foundations in order to reach the overall goals of Las Maestras Center.
Additionally, the AD provides the budget management and publicity for selected events and/or programs generated through the Critical/Creative Writing (CCW) specialization in the Department of English, which also operates under the auspices of LMC).
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.
Program Administration
LMC administers approximately eight public events per year. The Center also co-sponsors and collaborates in the production of campus lectures, panel discussions and community-based cultural events and lectures that actively engage the local Santa Barbara community as well as an international audience through virtual programming. The Associate Director typically serves as the Central Manager for the practical execution of such events, overseeing the multiple organizational pieces required for successful outcomes by directing tasks and timelines for student volunteers and staff, including publicity, facility management and hospitality. The Associate Director serves as the key contact and manager for visiting speakers and resident artists, (e.g. coordinating itineraries, travel plans, etc.).
Fiscal Management and Grant Writing
A primary role of the AD is to facilitate the programmatic and financial growth of LMC through developing grant applications, identifying relevant foundation opportunities and cultivating LMC’s community of individual donors. Along with this, they are responsible for the fiscal management of LMC as a whole, maintaining a calendar of reporting due dates and timelines to ensure the financial health of the organization; all in consultation with the Director.
Program Analysis and Evaluation
The AD regularly meets with the Director to assess status of programming and its effectiveness. The AD monitors the demographics of program attendance and works with other campus centers and programs both to coordinate co-sponsored events and to ensure diversity of participants and audience.
Qualifications
Candidates must have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the time of the application.
Candidates must be fluent Spanish-speakers.
A Master of Arts degree preferred in the area of the Arts (i.e. visual, literary, performance study and/or practice) with direct experience in Arts Administration or comparable work in Arts Education or community settings. Skills in grant writing, research and fundraising, requiring strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as more general fiscal management; the ability to manage multiple projects in a timely manner; to set and meet deadlines and to work collaboratively toward problem-solving.
